Determine the electron configurations for CN+, CN, and CN-. (a) Which species has the strongest C–N bond? (b) Which species, if any, has unpaired electrons?

The bond order is ½ (6–2) = 2. We placed π2p orbitals below σ2p as both C and N have this arrangement of MOs due to large 2s – 2p interaction.

The bond order is ½ (7–2) = 2.5.

The bond order is ½ (8–2) = 3.

a) The strongest C–N bond is in CN ion, as it has the highest bond order.

b) CN molecule has one unpaired electron.
