You will have a mixture of three compounds where the two major components (>20%) will be a neutral and EITHER an acid or a base. The third minor component (<10%) is another neutral compound. You will be required to find the original mass percent of your mixture (A%, B%, C%) and identify the two major components. The possible compounds are listed below (and yes, you should provide safety and disposal info for all of them in your pre-lab). Additional reagents, solvents, etc. will be supplied as described in the book. If you think one of your unknowns is a base, it is strongly suggested that you isolate/purify that compound during the first week.

Benzoic acid

Benzoin

1,4-dibromobenzene

Fluorene

o-Toluic acid

4-aminoacetophenone

4-chloroaniline

phenanthrene

I have the choice of using these techniques: Solubility, TLC, extraction, distillation,

Crystallization, Filtration

and MP, dehydration of 4-cyclohexanol. Which do I use? I know I can't use distillation for a fact.
