I need help with calculating total percent recovery. I have to get the percent recovery for an extraction lab. My two compounds are 1) benzoic acid in methylene chloride and 2) p-dimethoxybenzene in ether.

These were my results

Benzoic acid recovered: 1.78 g

p-dime recovered: 0.56 g

The lab started off with 1 gram of a benzoic and p-dime mixture and when I used this to calculate the total percent recovery I got 234% which seems way too high. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Part A:

Kemmi Major separates a mixture of magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2, and silver chloride, AgCl, by dissolving the Mg(OH)2 with HCl(aq). She filters the solution to obtain the solid AgCl and dries it. Then she adds NaOH(aq) to the filtrate to force the Mg(OH)2 to form again. A second filtration isolates the Mg(OH)2 solid and it is dried too.

Kemmi begins with 4.5038 g of mixture initially. After the experimental work is finished and the solids are dried, the masses are 2.4837 g Mg(OH)2 and 1.8348 g AgCl.

Calculate the percent recovery of each component, the overall percent recovery, and the percent error. (five significant digits, units of %)

Noke Lew also separates a mixture of magnesium hydroxide and silver chloride from the same sample bottle as Kemmi. (Kemmi's work is described in the previous question.) However, Noke has made some mistakes in her experimental work. From an initial sample of 4.6239 g, she obtains 2.2702 g of Mg(OH)2 and 2.5431 g of AgCl.

Assuming Kemmi’s percentage values in the previous question are correct, decide if Noke has obtained masses that are too high or too low. (check all that apply).
