Solubility in 5% NaHCO3 (aq) and 5% NaOH(Aq)
Compounds that dissolve in sodium bicarbonate (Why?), a weak base, are relatively strong acids. Compounds that dissolve in NaOH(Why?), a strong base, may be either strong or weak acids. Thus, once can distinguish weak and strong acids by determing theirsolubility in both strong and weak bases. Some examples of strongeracids that are soluble in both NaOH and NaHCO3 are: Carboxylicacids (why stronger?), o/p-substituted di and trinitrophenols (whystronger?)
