Greetings,

I am VERY confused and need someone to simplify this example forme.I will be so grateful and rate lifesaver for sure!! My commentsarebelow the parts, but I do not understandwhy the answeris what it is.

The molecule in question SO2.

A. What is the lewis structure?

I understand that SO2 has 9 pairs of lone pairs. Sulfur is inthecenter and must have an octet. But, how do you know when tostartadding double bonds? And where? Why?

B. What is the shape?

I thought it was linear because the spacial arrangements need tobefar apart as possible? But it is bent? Wouldn't a bent moleculeinthis case make the lone electrons closer, than further apart? IamSO confused on this...Is there an 'easy' way on how to tellwhenthe electrons are furthest apart? For some reason, I'm having alotof trouble with this seemingly simple concept.

C. Is there a dipole moment?

I thought there would be no dipole moment because oxygen ismoreelectronegative than sulfur and the vector would cancelout. However, in the answer there is one with the dipolepointingdownward from the Sulfur. Again, very confused!!
