If we binge on leftover Halloween candy, the excess glucose is converted to acetyl-CoA and used to synthesize fat. However, after a vigorous workout that depletes glucose from glycogen, we need to eat carbohydrates to replenish the glycogen. We cannot use fat stores to synthesize the needed glucose. Explain why we can make fat from sugar but cannot make sugar from fat, even though sugar metabolism and fat metabolism are both connected through the citric acid cycle.
