INTRODUCTION Le Chatelier's Principle states that if an external stress is applied to a chemical system at equilibrium, the equilibrium will shift in the direction that minimizes the effect of the stress. In fact, Le Chatelier's Principle can be applied to any system at equilibrium. For example, Le Chatelier's Principle describes the delicate equilibrium that is maintained between the population of herbivores (antelope, wildebeest, zebra) and carnivores (lion, cheetah) on the African Savannah. When there is a stress or disturbance on the equilibrium, such as a disease or a drought, a decrease in the number of herbivores will cause a shift in all the populations until a new equilibrium is attained exist in a caretuly balanced state ofr equilibnm In terms of chemical systems there are three primary stresses that affect equilibrium: changes in concentration, changes in temperature and changes in pressure. The Effect of Concentration The reaction of phosphorous trichloride with chlorine gas PCI, (g)+ Cl2 (e) PCIs (g) Le Chatlier's principle predicts that if the Cl, concentration is increased by the addition of more chlorine gas, the equilibrium of the system will shift in the direction that will counteract the addition of the gas. In other words, the prediction is that the reaction will shift to use up some of the added chlorine gas by shifting toward the products. This shift in the equilibriu m continues until the system gradually reaches new equilibrium concentrations.
