Hello! I need help with this part of organic chemistry homework. I just want to make sure I did it right. The question marks mean that I had no idea how to do it and on question 1, letter C, there is a negative charge on the Oxygen. Please help thank you !

I'm working on a project I need some help with (BTW I asked my teacher and I am allowed to ask for help). If there was anything I wasn't clear on please tell me because I'm just hopelessly lost on this. Also just to note this actually has a fair bit of chemistry in it but because it's all related to electricity and there is no chemistal engineering subject Tab I put it here.

Okay so in this project we have a hypothetical scenario. In this scenario I'm on an abandoned island and I need to power a satellite for 97 minutes at 12 volts at 30 amps and 5 volts at 45 amps. But on this island are various supplies including a 1987 V8 engine which I think will provide 12 volts at 30 amps. Now what I need is fuel to get it going. I have 4 deep friers full of oil, 3 cases of magnum bottles of champagne, salt water from the ocean, 21 2 gallon jars of pickled eggs, and 33-5 gallon containers of italian salad dressing, and 23 #10 cans of tomato sauce. There is also an abandoned moonshine still. So using the oil from the friers, the champagne, and getting the oil out of the salad dressing I should be able to get a decent amount of biofuel correct? I also have 9 full 20# propane tanks and I read that propane can be used to make fuel burn more efficiently by taking the place of the air injection. If there anything else from this list that I could make into fuel of some kind? What about Moonshine everything I read mentions sugar and yeast which I don't think I have either of.

So assuming I have that all worked out okay that gets me my 12 volts at 30 amps. But I still need the 5 volts at 45 amps. And one solution I was thinking of was making voltic cells. Amoung the materials I have to work with that are of use here are some 1/2'' and 3/4'' copper pipes, 8 roles of aluminum foil, 23 20ft lengths of 6 in. sch. 40 PVC pipe, 17 20ft lengths of 4in. sch. 40 PVC pipe, and 9 20ft lengths of 2 in. Sch. 40 PVC pipe. I also have some cans of cold galvanizing spray paint ( meaning I have zinc), and various containers including a lot of PVC pipe, 55 gallon plastic drums, and a complete set of commercial pots and pans. I also have various wires but I'll put that asside for now. I also have access to some PH adjust (down)

Now what I want to do is make a battery set up that can deliver 5 volts at 45 amps for 97 minutes.

I know I can make several battery cells and connect them in series and parallel to get the desires voltage and current. But i'm having trouble figuring out what my voltage and amperage would be for each cell. Also how long would the charge last?

I read something called aluminum-air batteries but I'm not clear on how they are made or if they are ideal for what I need. Would using the pickling solution from the pickled eggs as my electrolyte be better than using the salt water? Or should I separate the vinegar out of the salad dressing and us that? Would using the PH adjust (down) help?

I tried looking up some reduction charts but those were all in aqueous. What I was able to get was that for copper and aluminum it was about 2 v potential and for copper Zinc it was about 1.01 v. Is this correct? For a base line lets say I just use the PVC pips, copper pipe, aluminum foil, Salt water, and for wiring I use copper wire. if I"m correct and I get about 2 V from each battery how do I find my amperage? What part of all this affects the current and how would I calculate it? Would using a different kind of wire be better? I have access to a couple different kinds.

Stereoisomerism: A Model Exercise

In this experiment you will construct models with your molecular model set that illustrate the concepts of chirality, chiral center (stereogenic center, asymmetric carbon atom), enantiomers, diastereomers, and meso forms. You will also learn about two conventions, R-S and Fischer, for designating the configurations of chiral molecules.

You will be asked several questions related to each construction exercise. Record the answers and then when you have finished all of the exercises, take the assessment listed in this folder. The questions will be repeated so that you can submit your answers electronically for grading.

Chiral centers

Procedure: Construct a model* in which a tetrahedral (sp 3) carbon atom (black) has four different model atoms attached to it. Use the light blue ball, red, blue and, green polyhedrons to represent four different atoms or groups attached to the central atom (black).

Chirality and Enantiomers

A center of chirality (from the Greek cheir, hand) imparts the property of handedness to a molecule. In this part of the experiment, the left- or right- handedness of molecules with a chiral center will be illustrated with models.

A molecule is said to be chiral (that is, to have the property of handedness) if its mirror image is not superimposable. The mirror image of a left hand, for example, is a right hand. A molecule that is achiral has a mirror image that is superimposible. We shall see that any molecule with a plane of symmetry is achiral.

Procedure: Reconstruct the original model (carbon (black) with light blue ball, red, blue and, green polyhedrons attached). Set the model on the desktop so that the substituent light blue ball atom points toward the ceiling.

Looking down on the model and proceeding clockwise from the green atom, record the colors of the three atoms that rest on the desktop.

Now construct a second model that is the mirror image of the first, and place it on the desktop with the light blue ball atom up:

The models you have just studied represent achiral molecules. Their mirror images are identical. They are optically inactive. Any molecule that has a plane of symmetry is achiral.

Diastereomers and Meso Forms

For any molecule that has two or more chiral centers, it is possible to have stereoisomers that are not mirror images. Stereoisomers that are not related as enantiomers are diastereomers. Diastereomers differ in all properties, chiral and achiral.

Procedure: Construct a model with four different groups (light blue ball, blue, red, and green) attached to a central carbon atom (black). Construct another model identical to the first. (Be sure they are identical by making sure the models are superimposable.) Now remove the green substituent from each model and connect the two carbon atoms with a bond. Use this model with the two stereogenic centers for the next series of questions (14 -26).

The last model studied here represents a meso form. The model possesses two chiral centers, but they are of equal and opposite chirality. This situation arises when a molecule has two identical chiral centers. Because the molecule has a readily accessible conformation with a plane of symmetry, it is achiral and optically inactive.

Tartaric acid is a molecule that corresponds to the models constructed in this section of the experiment.

The R-S Convention

The letter R (from rectus, right) or S (from sinister, left) is used to designate the configuration at a chiral center. Procedure: Construct a model of an asymmetric carbon atom [with a black, a blue, a green, and a red ball attached] that corresponds to the following three-dimensional drawing:

Set the model on the desk as shown. With your left hand, tip the model to the left so that only the red and green balls rest on the table. Viewed from the top, the black and blue balls project toward you (left and right, respectively).

The convention for Fischer projection formulas is as follows: The asymmetric carbon lies in the plane of the page or paper, horizontal groups come out of the plane of the paper toward the viewer, and vertical groups recede behind the paper away from the viewer.

Save the model you have just constructed for comparison with other models that you will construct.
