Document Summary

Covalent bonds - result of sharing of electrons between two atoms. Electronegativity - measure of affinity a nucleus has for outer shell electrons. Electrons in covalent bond are held closer to nucleus with greater electronegativity compared to nucleus with lower electronegativity. Ionic bonds - formed when one atom donate selectron to another. Hydrogen bonds - result of attraction of partial positive and partial negative charges on different water molecules ; can form between hs with partial positive charge and other strongly electronegative atoms with partial negative charge. Hydrophobic - do not mix well with water; unable to make h bonds. Ex. nonpolar hydrocarbons and lipids (fats and cholesterol) Hydrophilic - mix well with water; polar and can dissolve in water. Ex. ionic compounds, polar organic compounds (oh, ketones, carbonyls), weak acids (phosphates, aas), and sugars / carbohydrates. Oxidation - loss of electrons; tend to release energy and are source of bioenergy.
