NURS 221 Lecture Notes - Oral Mucosa, Microorganism, Homeostasis
Document Summary
Nurs 221 week 2: infection control and safe environments of care (pg. Defences against infection: normal flora: body contains microorganisms that reside on the skin, saliva and oral mucosa, and gi/gu tracts that do not cause disease, but rather maintain health. May assist in fighting infection/inflammation and maintaining homeostasis: body system defences: each organ system has defence mechanisms physiologically suited to its structure and function (ex. airways of lungs lined with cilia) Inflammation: protective vascular reaction that delivers fluid, blood products, and nutrients to interstitial tissues in an area of injury. This process eliminates pathogens or dead tissues and repairs body cells. Infection acquired after admission to a health care facility that was not present or incubating at the time of admission. Most common in areas of skin or mucous membrane breakdown (surgical wounds, pressure injuries, etc. ) Drainage may be yellow, green, or brown. May complain about tightness/tenderness: systemic infections. Cause more generalized symptoms (fever, fatigue, malaise)
