Document Summary
Many studies have found no difference between acupuncture and sham acupuncture. Regular acupuncture done by professionals, needles done in the right spots and targets specific areas. Sham acupuncture done by those who either are not as experienced, or places them on the wrong points of the body. Cochrane review (furlan et al. , 2011) of 35 randomized clinical trials of acupuncture for low back pain saw small effects immediately after session and short-term follow up. More effective than sham treatment, not more effective than conventional or other alternative treatment. However, it is focused on treating all problems, rather than zeroing in on something specific. Didn"t necessarily seem that it worked better, no side effects; almost completely safe. Proposed that acupuncture might release endorphins, which inhibits/relieves pain in the body. May be effective for some types of pain and not for others. Based on idea that misalignments of bones and joints can interfere with homeostasis of body.
