II. Knowledge and analysis questions (20 points each)
Please answer four of the five questions in full sentences, 250-word minimum (about one double-spaced page) per
answer. Instead of just “winging” your answers, please give serious thought to each answer and incorporate relevant
readings. Your answers should be specific enough to demonstrate your understanding and analysis of the key issues.
If you answer all five questions, we will grade the first four, not the best four. On other hand, if you fewer than four,
you will receive a 0 on any missing answers.
You may use notes, books, other readings, or the Internet to answer these questions. But do not cut and paste
segments from the readings or the Internet. Please be sure to cite any borrowed information so as to give credit to
the original source. You don’t need footnotes, but you can just give an in-text citation such as (Lee, 23).
We will compare your answers against ChatGPT answers, so please write your own answers. You can discuss the
questions in a study group, but each answer must be original and we will check TurnItIn reports.
1. How did Japan pursue its own empire-building process, especially in the context of Fukuzawa Yukichi’s
De-Asianization essay of 1885 and Arita Hachihirō’s 1940 piece on the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity
Sphere? Provide your own analysis of these two proponents of Japanese Pan-Asianism and how Japan’s
position developed over those years, discussing quotes from the two pieces.
2. Referring to the Dikötter and Moeran readings rather than lecture slides, what are some ways in which urban
life changed in early 20th-century China and Japan? Also give your informed analysis of the major domestic
and international political, economic, and social factors that facilitated these changes.
