Occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to brain. Males tend have about 50% greater likelihood of sustaining a tbi than do females across age groups worldwide. Falls are most common cause of tbi in old age . Tbis can be classified as either open or closed-head injuries (differe in the way the skull is affected) Suddenly hits an object or an object hits head without breaking skull . This can occur due to a sudden impact or acceleration and deceleration of the head. E. g. , injeries include conncussions, contusions, and diffuse axonal injuries. May be caused by falls, car accidents, sport injuries, or other types of accidents. Often caused by penetration of the skull by a foreign object such as a bullet, knife, or other sharp object. Not all tbis are focal, many are diffuse . Focal tbis are injuries that occur/localized in a specific area of the brain.
