Document Summary

Discuss your understanding of the optimally effective child counsellor relationship. There are some basic attributes and behaviors which are optimally effective for a child counsellor relationship. For this to be achieved the counsellor has to be: congruent the child needs to perceive their relationship with the counsellor as trustworthy and the environment being a safe one. The ability to get in touch with one"s own inner child is important to be able to effectively join with the child. If this is not the case the counsellor will be perceived as a parent or any other close relative. In being accepting we do not show approval or disapproval. To approve or disapprove would have an effect on the child"s behavior. Counsellors who wish to work with children do need to have a good understanding of the psychological theories which underpin their counselling work. Early adolescents tend to be concrete and see things in black and white.
