Document Summary

Amino acids: the basic building blocks or monomers of polypeptide chains and proteins. All amino acids contain a central carbon atom which is bonded to: a hydrogen atom (h) an amine group (nh2) a carboxylic acid group (cooh) a variable group (r) which differs between amino acids, resulting in distinct chemical properties. The reaction through which amino acids join is called a condensation reaction, meaning that formed. This occurs when the -oh on a carboxyl group of one amino acid binds with an -h on group of another amino acid. Then, the two amino acids bind together to form a dipeptide, h by a peptide bond. Before monomers can underg condensation polymerisation need to be activated by a carr molecule. The process is facilitated by specif enzymes peptide bond (covalent) Primary (1 ) structure - the linear sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain.
