Political leadership developed in the kingdoms of the north. France, england and the holy roman empire expanded their borders southward into the mediterranean world. Capetian dynasty expanded control of france outward from paris through marriage alliances. English kings lost land to the capetians and began marrying into mediterranean families. Roman law, ideas of citizenship, and representative government came from the mediterranean world. Pope"s tried to assert their authority over that of kings = king starting to push back. Holy roman emperors attempted to gain control over italy. Medieval life predominantly in the countryside; manors, estates helped millions of small towns/villages emerge; walled towns for defense. Roman cities leftover rose to prominence through church: Cathedrals became ecclesiastical centers for the church. Cathedra = bishop"s chair; epitome of gothic architecture.
