Document Summary

Lecture 5: implicit premises, inductive reasoning, and good. When some people give arguments, some assumptions be left as implicit: cloning human beings is wrong because it is unnatural. This argument is seen as not valid: the person has the hidden assumption that something unnatural is wrong as so the argument becomes invalid, if the assumption is added to the argument, then the argument is valid. Revealing hidden assumption is useful for revealing hidden or neglecting factors: ex. Consider the argument: dipsy bought one ticket in a fair lottery with 10000 tickets. So, dipsy is not going to win the lottery. : argument is not valid since dipsy could be lucky and win the lottery, however, in this the conclusion is highly likely to be true based off the premise. Depends on the probability of the conclusion being true. Very important in science everyday: we make many assumptions, we see dark clouds and think it will likely rain.
