Chinese (it is the family of languages spoken in and around china: but not mutually intelligible. In fact at least 12 mutually unintelligible languages: mandarin chinese is the most well known dialect (most widely spoken as well) Interlocutor"s (other person in the conversation) language abilities: which language will best convey intended message. Simultaneous bilingualism: aka concurrent bilingualism, learning two l1s concurrently, but , hard to gauge strength of exposure to either language, social status of the two languages, who speaks which language to child. The bilingual disadvantage: tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon, temporary difficulty in lexical retrieval, mainly of less common words, compared with monolinguals, bilinguals experience more tot states. Why: weaker links hypothesis, lower word frequencies in each language, less practice more difficulty in lexical access. Interference hypothesis: translation equivalents interfere with one another (takes longer to recall the word of interest: french-english bilingual attempts to retrieve dog, but chien interferes.
