Language is a system of communication using sounds or symbols that enables us to express our feelings, thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Animals use sounds/gestures as a form of language to communicate survival needs. Humans use variety of signals combined in an infinite amount of ways. Human language provides a way to arrange a sequence of signals to transmit messages sounds for spoken language letters for written language gestures for sign language. Language is universal because: deaf people find a way to communicate all humans with normal capacity develop a language unconsciously is universal across cultures, and develops similarly across cultures. "unique but the same" - dif. words sounds and rules, all have nouns, questions past/present tense. Broca"s area (temporal lobe) is responsible for the production of language. Wernicke"s area (temporal lobe) is responsible for comprehension. B. f skinner - language is learned by reinforcement.
