PHYS 103 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Electromagnet, Paper Clip
Document Summary
When the battery was connected, and the cord was laid on top of the compass the needle went directly from north to south. Here the coil is wrapped around the wire 100 times and the ends have been sanded to allow the magnetic flow. Here the magnet is connected with the nail, and the needle of the compass turns directly to the side of the north end of the nail. This is where i determined the north end of the needle. In this picture i used the electromagnet to pick up paper clips. After moving the wire around and wrapping it around the clip a few times i was able to pick up three paper clips. After the clip was disconnected it could still pick up a paperclip. Next, i added two batteries, but was only able to pick up one paperclip.
