Physical punishment has the opposite effect of what the parents are usually trying to accomplish. In the case scenario given, johnny s parents believe that they can elicit kindness towards his little brother through physical punishment. By helping the parents understand the negative effects of punishment is difficult, since they have already formed an opinion that it is effective since they were raised the same way. One of the ways to approach the parents to help them to realize that punishment is not effective would be to pose the question to the parents about their own experiences.
