PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Standard Deviation, Central Tendency, Scatter Plot
Document Summary
To create, gather, and communicate scienti c knowledge, psychologists employ the scienti c method. While the objective of applied research is to identify solutions to real-world issues, the objective of basic research is to increase our knowledge. Both types exchange knowledge and cooperate to develop research. Scienti c publications offer research reports outlining investigations so that both experts and non-scientists can study the empirical results. Scienti c procedures have organizing principles that give them structure and regularity, such as rules, theories, and research hypotheses. Data are gathered and analyzed using descriptive, correlational, and experimental research approaches. Case studies, surveys, psychological testing, naturalistic observation, and laboratory observation are examples of descriptive designs. These designs are intended to provide a snapshot of the participants" present-day attitudes, sentiments, or actions. The link between two or more variables is measured through correlational research designs. To graphically display the relationships between the variables, a scatterplot may be used.
