Document Summary

How personal and painful sappho"s poems are in relation to love. One of the most popular roman poets. His group tried to be clever in their intellect in relation to modern themes, shorter poems. Lesbia - a common theme in his poems, a real person (not actually the real name [real name likely claudia]) of the lover, documents a stormy affair between them. Lack of punctuation gives a breathless feeling. Could be simply a translation, a gift for lesbia, and impress her. Naming the women reduces the mystery of the poem. 4th stanza, he berates himself and what has stopped him, ends with him believing he can change his fate, and beat the other man for lesbia s love.
