PSYB57H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter FINAL EXAM NOTES: Mismatch Negativity, Echoic Memory, Long-Term Memory
Document Summary
Lecture 01 brief history of cognitive psychology. Lecture 05 foundations of human memory systems. Working memory: what we"re thinking in our mind right now, information moment to moment. Encoding: the process of putting information into long term memory. Retrieval: the process by which we take a long-term memory and put it into our working memory to solve a problem, make a decision etc. Visual sensory memory (iconic memory) sperling 1960. Whole-report procedure: showing participants a bunch of letters for less than a second: trying to capture how many letters people could remember- about 3-4 letters. Interesting because if you can only take 3-4 pieces of information, like what the whole report procedure was trying to prove, then this would not happen. Visual sensory memory must be taking in all the information: your attention can grab out 4 of the letters in the row you need to remember, and bring them into working memory.
