Document Summary

Biol 3680 - unit 6: feeding patients, release criteria, and euthanasia (nov 16th-27th) Always feed baby mammals on their stomach, with the head elevated ~45 degrees. Never feed baby mammals on their back. Aspiration pneumonia is a condition when the baby mammals has inhaled (usually food) into their trachea, and it enters the lungs, setting up a bacterial infection. In some cases, the animal may actually drown in fluid. If this happens, wipe the nose and mouth, ensure a clean airway, and keep the head tilted forwards. The animal will likely need oxygen and antibiotics. Be sure you washed syringes and tubes in warm soap and water. Then allow them to soak for 20 minutes in pure vinegar. Finally rinse the tubes and syringes well, and be sure to flush the insides out with water. When mixing formula, follow the labelled instructions. Allow formula to sit for 4 hours in order to completely dissolve.
