Document Summary

Transforms solar energy into the chemical energy of a carbohydrate. Not all of this energy is able to be transformed into chemical energy - some energy is lost. A double membrane surrounds a fluid filled area called stroma. A 3rd membrane system within the stroma forms flattened sacs called thylakoids (stacked as grana) The space within each thylakoid is believed to be connected (called thylakoid space) The chlorophyll and other pigments reside within the membranes of the thylakoid. These pigments are capable of absorbing solar energy. Oxidations occurs when a molecule gives up electrons (e-) and hydrogen ions (h+) Reduction occurs when a molecule gains electrons (e-) and hydrogen ions (h+) Photosynthesis can be broken down into 2 separate sets of reactions. Radiant energy (solar energy) can be described in terms of its wavelength and its energy content. Only 40-50% of the solar radiation that hits the earth"s atmosphere actually hits the surface, mainly visible light.
