Advances in medicine and science led to people living longer lives. Mass production of books and demand for literate labor force led to the rise in public schools and eventually, compulsory education. Entered its 2nd phase in america in the early years of the 20th century, based the mass production of cars(ford motors, general motors, etc), electrical machinery, steel, oil, and chemicals.
