Document Summary
Understanding type 1 diabetes mellitus in adolescents & role of nurses. Marlee j. verhun, monique d. j. ouellette, rosana m. bouchard. Diabetes type 1 (t1d) is a chronic condition in which an individual"s body cannot regulate blood sugar levels. Typically, insulin is released to drive glucose into cells to supply the body with energy, and stop blood sugar levels from rising too high. In t1d, this process is impaired and unable to occur naturally. Diabetes is the leading cause of retinopathy, neuropathy and various cardiovascular problems (corbett & smith, 2020). The nature of t1d usually allows for early diagnoses, but living with t1d becomes particularly challenging in adolescence. The adolescent body experiences a developmental period where physical, psychosocial and emotional changes take place. Growing and developing with such a complex condition, which requires lifelong treatment, is an added burden. Self-management is the day-to-day tasks an individual must take to control or reduce the impact of disease (salma & meherali, 2021).
