Check parenteral manual: tells you if you can give it, what the infusion rate is, what type of dilution is needed, what it is compatible with. Avoid errors in calculation: always double check math and have someone els check it for co-signature. Premixed iv meds: already contains prescribed dose, manual will tell you what rate to set it at. Mixing yourself: take a mini bag (25, 50 or 100ml) and you add the medication to the bag, very important to label, the manual will tell you what bag to get or what concentration is needed. A primary alaris line with fluid already infusing, typically normal saline. Secondary line, attached to primary line so that you can give the second medication. Pt id label and possibly a medication label. Ensure compatibility of iv fluids and medication. If less than 10%= no need to remove fluid. If greater than 10%= need to remove volume.
