HSE331 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Stress (Biology), Overtraining, Catabolism
Document Summary
Learning objectives: identify the fundamental components of a periodized plan, understand how to manipulate components and apply in tailored plan. This stimulus is commonly referred to as load or workload. It"s important to note that training is a catabolic process, meaning it involves breaking down the system. The goal of a training session is not to get fitter but to elicit damage in the system. Recognising the damage, the system responds by rebuilding to be a bit better than it was previously. Perhaps two of the most important principles to consider here are: recovery - remember, the athlete doesn"t get fitter during training, they get fitter after training when the body repairs itself from the damage of training. A program must get harder ("overload") in a way that slowly builds over time ("progressive"). Doing the same thing week after week leads to stagnation. Interestingly (at least it was interesting to me!
