Document Summary

A high-context culture relies on implied communication and nonverbal cues: personal space. This is the region surrounding a person which they regard as psychologically theirs: territoriality. This is a term associated with nonverbal communication that refers to how people use space to communicate ownership or occupancy of areas and possessions: cultural relativism. This is the idea that a person"s beliefs, values, and practices should be understood based on that person"s own culture, and not be judged against the criteria of another: low-context nonverbal communication. A low-context culture is dependent on direct communication. In this culture, much of the information is clearly defined. This is the space within social distance and out of personal distance: facial affect. This is the expression of emotions or feelings displayed to others through facial expressions. Communication across cultures: context refers to the value that cultures place on indirect and direct communication.
