Axon - passes messages away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles, or glands. Axon hillock - point of connection between cell body and axon. Terminal branches of axon - form junctions with other cells. Neural impulse - electrical signal traveling down the axon. Myelin sheath - covers the axon of some neurons and helps speed neural impulses. Carry the incoming information from the sensory receptors to the cns. Local connections; connect the two neurons (mostly in brain) Control early placement and connections of neurons. Carry the outgoing information from the cns to the muscles and glands (brain & spinal cord) Link one area of the cns to another. White matter - over 50% of brain. Need plasticity in myelination as well as neuronal connections. Neurons are electrically charged when at rest (polarized)
