Document Summary

The mother"s behavior may impact fetal cognitive development. *impairments of learning, memory, problem solving, attention, & motor coordination. *ranges in severity from barely noticeable to severe. *this depends on the amount and timing of mother"s drinking. *developing neurons need to be constantly excited to survive. Tracking infants" eye movements can give us some insight . *gives us clues about what infants pay attention to, visually. By 5 months of age, infants have seen plenty but have yet to crawl very much. Crawling helps infants to develop a sense of depth and distance. Habituation: decreased response to a repeated stimulus. Dishabituation: change in a stimulus increases a previously habituated response. *this is the basis for eye tracking studies in infants, too! Common infant behavior that is measured in relation to auditory stimuli = sucking (on a thumb or pacifier) *infants suck more vigorously when aroused by certain sounds. Infants can distinguish between sounds that occur in any language!
