BIOL 108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 99: Atheroma, Coronary Circulation, Glyphosate
Document Summary
A pre-disease condition that predisposes individuals to heart disease and diabetes. Individuals with metabolic syndrome have any 3 of the following: Cardiovascular disease: diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Atherosclerosis: hardening of the arteries from deposition of arterial plaque. Plaque is composed of cholesterol, other lipids, becomes mineralized, fibrous. Plaque restricts blood flow, increases danger of clot formation. A heart attack results when a clot blocks a coronary artery (one that supplies the heart muscle). Depending on severity, can result in decreased ability of heart to pump blood to body, or can result in immediate death. A stroke results when a clot blocks the blood supply to the brain, killing brain cells. An atherogenic diet increases the risk of atherosclerosis: Too many kcals, leading to being overweight or obesity. Dietary recommendations to reduce risk of heart disease. Fruits, vegetables (high in potassium, lowers blood pressure risk). Avoid processed foods with high salt (reduces blood pressure risk).
