Document Summary

4 types: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acid. These polymers are made from single monomers sticking with each other using covalent bonds. Basis of life, most diverse range of functions (duh) Can be denatured due to ph, temp, exposure to chemicals and other external factors. Ex: albumin in egg white can turn solid because of heat. Conjugated proteins, act as a catalyst for cellular reactions. Catalytic: affect the rate of reaction (can be slowed down as well) The r group can be polar, non-polar, acidic, or basic. That determines one"s position in the protein complex and how the polypeptide is structured differently. There are 20 amino acids and 9 of them are essential (unproduceable) Primary: one polypeptide chain, peptide bonds, flexible bonds. Made by hydrogen bonds between the amino and carbonyl groups. (side chains are exposed outside of the structure)
