PSY1020 Chapter Notes -Naturalistic Observation
Document Summary
Understanding identifies the causes of a phenomena. Independent variable (iv) manipulated by the experimenter. Control group group similar to the experimental group but isn"t exposed to the treatment (i. e. given a placebo) Quasi-experimental designs most common and already exist. Some complex phenomena cannot be readily tested using pure experimental methods. Seeks to describe phenomena rather than to manipulate variables. In-depth study of the behaviour of one person/small group. Used when large numbers of participants are not available. In-depth observation of a phenomenon as it occurs in nature. Provides data that can be useful in framing hypothesis. Reveals phenomena as they exist outside the lab. Allows study of complex phenomena not easily reproduced. Observer effects: the presence of an observer may alter behaviour. Asking people questions about their attitudes, behaviours, etc. Reveals attitudes or self-reported behaviours of a large sample of individuals. Self-reported bias: people may not be able to report honestly or accurately.
