Document Summary

The human experience is one of being a single entity that thinks, feels, (and the connections between them) However, our sense of self is derived from approximately 100 billion neurons. An excitation that travels along the axon at a constant strength, no matter how far it travels. Specialized junction between one neuron and another. A presynaptic neuron releases chemical signals that either excite or inhibit the postsynaptic neuron. Takes place naturally, as a result of brain maturation. *starts at birth and completes in your mid-20s. *cause: gradual decay of a pathway of axons that release dopamine. *carbidopa prevents levodopa from being broken down before entering brain. How do drugs impact behavior: stimulants, hallucinogens, depressants, narcotics, marijuana, stimulants. Drugs that increase energy, alertness, and activity. Dopamine is a critical component of motivation. Inhibition of dopamine reuptake causes presynapses to run low on their supply of dopamine. *this causes stimulant users to crash ; experience temporary lethargy/depression.
