Document Summary

Lecture 1 & 2: cells and tissue (slides) 1. 3. 2: nervous tissue, muscle tissue, epithelial tissue, connective tissue. Define epithelial tissue: a sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity: covering and lining epithelium/creates boundaries, glandular epithelium/ secretion. Epithelial functions: protection skin, absorption g. i. tract, filtration, excretion, secretion, sensory reception. Description: single layer, flattened cell with disc-shaped central nuclei and little cytoplasm. Function: allow materials to pass by diffusion and filtration. Location: kidney (filter blood), air sacs, lining of heart, blood vessels. Location: kidney tubules, ducts and secretory portions of small glands, ovary surface. Description: single layer tall cells with round nuclei. Function: absorption, secretion, enzymes, ciliated type propels mucus. Location: non-ciliated type lines most of digestive tract (stomach to rectum), uterine tubes. Description: single layer of cells with differing heights. Function: secretes substances especially mucus and propulsion of mucus. Location: non-ciliated type in male"s sperm carrying ducts of large glands; ciliated types in trachea.
