Document Summary

The damage to the earth"s environment is caused both by natural (non- anthropogenic) and human (anthropogenic) causes. The natural impacts are non- preferable and often unpredictable. Knowledge of natural hazards is essential in order to mitigate loss of life and property through preventive measures. On the other hand human induced damages to the earth"s atmosphere are avoidable if we pay attention towards our environment. Earthquake occurs as the result of sudden release of pressure along geological faults and can occur anywhere. Earthquake lasts only few seconds but causes extensive damage to buildings, pipelines, power, communication systems, roads and bridges. In fact, the main cause of damage during recent earthquake is fire from damaged gas pipelines and power lines. In case of slope failure, which leads to liquefaction, earthquake may trigger landslides. When earthquakes hit oceans, huge waves can develop and threaten coastal areas. And when earthquakes happen near lakes, tsunamis may form and inundate adjacent regions.
