LIBRLT385 Lecture : Learning Activity 5 Children Programs Funding
Document Summary
Libraries have long struggled with the dilemma of whether to charge for programming or offer all programs for free to the public. While free programming ensures equal access for all children, regardless of their family"s socioeconomic position; charging admission often enables libraries to offer programs they otherwise wouldn"t be able to afford, such as craft programs or professional entertainers. Ironically, charging a fee can also increase interest and attendance, as patrons may place a higher value on fee-based services, operating under the assumption that you get what you pay for. ". However, charging admission will inevitably restrict access, deterring and even excluding low- income families. Personally, i view libraries as safe spaces and judgement free zones for everyone regardless of economic background. I think more citizens will be compelled to access library programs and services if it was completely free of charge and in most libraries, they are free.
