The erd describes a structure and restrictions that we think correctly constrains the data at a point in time: it does not describe how we move from state-to-state. For that we"d need a process flow diagram. At this stage, we are not concerned with the processes: we are following the book process here. Documentation of business processes demonstrate how processes are supposed to work. Existing forms that tell you what information is currently collected. Interviews (both initially and later in the process) provide insight into how business processes actually work. Existing databases can give you an idea of some of the base entities you can track. Some members of your team should have industry knowledge, preferably with some experience at other companies. Use cases are defined interactions that mirror what happens in various business processes. After syndicating your first design, you will get feedback. Make sure to use this feedback to refine the design.
