Document Summary

Bankruptcy is a way for people who cannot pay back a debt, get a fresh start by creating a repayment plan, or liquidate assets to pay. Financially troubled businesses are also protected by bankruptcy laws (us courts, n. d. ). A bankruptcy case will begin when the individual who is in debt petitions the bankruptcy court. For individuals, they can file for a chapter 7 or a chapter 13 bankruptcy. Most people don"t start acquiring debt with the assumption that they will later on file for bankruptcy; most start with a plan to pay back the debt, but emergencies happen, and life can get in the way. Bankruptcy is not just for low to middle-class earners; people such as president. Donald trump, walt disney, larry king, and willie nelson have all filed bankruptcy. Bad times can hit anyone and leave us in a bind where we have to choose to feed our family or pay back a debt.
