Pots are transportable, and typically use bait to attract target species, with retention devices to prevent their escape . The benefits of using pots include decreased rates of bycatch , minimal impacts to marine habitats, and a reduced contribution to ghost fishing (when constructed with biodegradable twine) when compared to gillnets . In addition, caught fish often exceeds that of other gears where the act of capture imposes immediate damage to the fish . Fishing is one of the oldest ways by which people have fed themselves and their families. Except for gathering shellfish by hand and spearing fish (figure 1), primitive trapping is probably the oldest form of fishing.
