Document Summary

Singer vs. fox: cattle, chickens, ducks, hogs. Just because something is worthy of equal consideration, doesn"t mean we must treat it the same way. For example: a woman might have a right to an abortion, but a man does not, an adult human being might have a right to vote, but a dog doesn"t. How we should treat them depends on what capacities they possess, and that will differ across individuals and species. But why they matter in the first place is because of their shared capacity to suffer. Alternative accounts of why racism and sexism are wrong, The average member of any group (race, sex, etc. ) is equal to the average member of any group. The suffering of any individual is just as important as the suffering of any other, provided it"s the (race, sex, etc. Principle of equal consideration: the like interests of any two sentient beings are worthy of equal moral consideration.
