Document Summary

Although this seems like a legitimate idea to try to civilize the world and provide justice on international crime, universal jurisdiction is less potent and more problematic than expected in application. Supporters of universal jurisdiction commend its potential to bring wicked criminals to justice and end impunity for atrocity. But the idea of universal jurisdiction is not only met with supporters but also with critics who condemn the imposition of one state"s judiciary power into the sovereignty of another state"s territory. This is referred to as the tyranny of judges . Jurisdiction indicates the power of a state to exercise authority over all persons and things within its territory, therefore, when another state is trying to impose universal jurisdiction imminent problems arise. This yields to the principles of territoriality, nationality, residence, protection of state, etc. With this in mind, it is obvious that there cannot exist an all encompassing, truly unlimited, universal jurisdiction.
