CSB329H1 Lecture Notes - Embryonic Stem Cell, Cardiac Muscle Cell, Myocardial Rupture
Document Summary
No evidence for adult cardiac stem cells in humans or any cell that can replace damaged. Human heart does not repair after damage. Cardiac injury triggers activation of fibroblast which secrete collagen to prevent heart rupture. Collagen based non-contractile scar persists in the heart. Scar formation could lead to heart failure. Idea that c-kit positive cells in the heart or bone marrow are cardiac stem cells. Could repair a scarred heart post myocardial infarction. Supply cells that would produce new cardiomyocytes. All articles supported c kit positive cells to produce new cardiomyocytes, all were from one research lab and other labs couldn"t reproduce. So adult heart has limited regenerative capacity. Major advances in a field should be replicated by multiple labs. Should be reproducible that they self renew and differentiate into appropriate cells. Source of cells - allogenic or autologous. Just cardiomyocytes or other cell type we dont want. Will they integrate with cardiac muscle cells.
