Chapter 7 mechanisms of perception: hearing, touch, smell, taste and attention. ^^^these are characterized by three major principles; hierarchical organization, functional segregation, and parallel processing. ^ the higher level the damage the more specific and complex the deficit: the case of the man who mistook his wife for a hat (dr. p) is an example. Sensation; process of detecting the presence of stimuli. Perception; higher order process of integrating, recognizing and interpreting complete patterns of sensations. ( dr. p"s problem was one of visual perception not visual sensation) Functional segregation; not be mistaken with functional homogeneity, it characterizes the organization of sensory systems, each level of cerebral cortex in the sensory system contains functionally distinct areas that specialize in different kinds of analysis. Parallel processing; sensory systems are parallel systems where info flows through the components through many pathways parallel processing is the simultaneous analysis of a signal in different ways by the multiple parallel pathways of a neural network.
