PSYC1011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Zell Miller, Intelligence Quotient, Reductionism
Document Summary
Psychology talks about people"s well being (physical and psychological) Field built on scientific findings as well as scientific skepticism. Shaw, k. n. ky (1993) - the mozart effect. Influential article called music and spatial task performance . Really caught on in the media, transferred over to the belief that you should expose your children to classical music to make them smarter. Zell miller (from georgia) gave every child in georgia a mozart cd to make the children smarter. Their study did not use any children nor did they prove it had any impact on children. Glen schellenberg (2001) published a piece saying that by having the kids read stephen. No actual evidence or proven benefit about improving children"s iq. Most of the time the media doesn"t report that. Non reductionists believe a personal experience can transcend the physical. All research is making an argument, have a question we want to answer, collect data and analyze, draw conclusions and present them.
