The study of how people"s thoughts, feelings and behaviour influence and are influenced by the behaviour of others social cognition mental processes associated with people"s perceptions of reactions to other people social influence. People have two ways to evaluate qualitative attributes: temporal or social comparison. The latest mean that people use others as a basis of comparison for evaluating themselves. Lastly an unfavourable comparison of your own status with that of others can produce a sense of relative deprivation. Social norms are learned, socially based rules that prescribe what people should or should not do in various situations. One very powerful norm is reciprocity, the tendency to respond to others as they have acted towards you.
