Lecture : Criteria of Literary Text
Document Summary
Literature is hard to define because it follows the represented culture, which is ever-changing. Traditionally, literature refers to artistic and fictional works that are usually formulated with exceptional language. Literary texts express meaning at multiple levels and are not necessarily bound to a specific function. Literary theory is the body of ideas and methods we use to read literature. It proposes di erent models of interpretation and analysis, which are applied by critics to formulate their criticism. Literary studies is the study of written works, mostly referring to those of imagination such as poetry, fiction, and drama. A pluralist history of literary studies is an expression of ongoing debates within the profession about cultural patterns and values. Meaning is a ected by the use of language. Meaning could be referential, which is extracted from syntax, or connotative; which is extracted from the implicit aspects of the message: the influence of the speaker and the perception of the reader.
